The photographs presented through this app, are part of a monitoring project of medium to large mammals, developed by Panthera to support the Environmental Management Plan of the Reventazón Hydroelectric Project (RHP) of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank.

The RHP is located in the Barbilla-Destierro Biological Subcorridor, also known as the “Path of the Jaguar”, as it is a critical area for connecting populations of this wildcat and other species, between Central Volcanic and Talamanca Biosphere Reserves. This hydroelectric project, when completed, will have the largest installed capacity for hydropower in the country, providing electricity for approximately 525,000 households.

Panthera’s monitoring project uses over 80 camera traps (heat and motion sensitive cameras) that help track the passage of animals along the entire Subcorridor. Some of these cameras can send photos via cell signal, which allows you to get through this app, “real time” sights of the animals, as they walk in front of the cameras. This monitoring project will help to lay the foundation to prioritize and protect the critical connectivity habitats for the “Path of the Jaguar” and its biodiversity.
